Reports To: Medical Director / Head VeterinarianJob SummaryThe Veterinary Surgeon is responsible for diagnosing, treating, and performing surgical procedures on animals to maintain and restore health. The role requires high clinical competence, ethical practice, and adherence to veterinary medical standards, with a strong focus on animal welfare, client communication, and teamwork.
Clinical & Medical Duties
- Conduct comprehensive physical examinations and clinical assessments
- Diagnose illnesses, injuries, and medical conditions using appropriate diagnostic tools
- Prescribe and administer medications, treatments, and preventive care
- Perform soft tissue and, where qualified, orthopedic surgical procedures
- Provide emergency and critical care when required
- Monitor post-operative recovery and manage follow-up care
Surgical Responsibilities
- Perform routine and advanced surgeries according to competency level
- Ensure strict compliance with aseptic and surgical safety protocols
- Maintain accurate surgical records and anesthesia monitoring
- Manage pain control and post-operative treatment plans
- Preventive & Wellness CareAdminister vaccinations and parasite control programs
- Advise on nutrition, behavior, and general animal health
- Promote preventive healthcare and early disease detection
- Client CommunicationClearly explain diagnoses, treatment options, risks, and prognoses to clients
- Obtain informed consent for procedures and surgeries
- Provide compassionate guidance and aftercare instructions
- Compliance & DocumentationMaintain accurate and up-to-date medical records
- Ensure compliance with local veterinary regulations and clinic policies
- Follow ethical standards and professional conduct at all times
- Team CollaborationWork closely with veterinary nurses, assistants, and support staff
- Mentor junior veterinarians or interns when requiredParticipate in case discussions and continuous improvement initiatives
